The best place to spend New Year’s Eve in Europe in 2026 is Edinburgh, where Hogmanay runs from a torchlight procession on December 29 to a Street Party for about 45,000 people under the castle fireworks on December 31, with tickets on sale now for £39 (about $52). London has the bigger fireworks show, but it’s ticket-only at £40 to £55 for visitors, and Berlin and Vienna throw the best free parties. If you’d rather have a seat and dinner than a spot in a crowd, book a river cruise as soon as your flights are set: this New Year’s Eve dinner cruise on the Thames puts you on the river for the midnight fireworks.
New Year’s Eve falls on a Thursday this year and New Year’s Day on a Friday, so most people will make a long weekend of it. Every date and price below was checked on October 30, 2026, against the event’s official site. Several cities hadn’t published their 2026 programs yet; where that’s the case we say so and describe last year’s format.

Edinburgh: Hogmanay, the best all-round New Year’s Eve
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is the best New Year’s Eve in Europe if you want more than one night, because it’s a festival that runs across three days. The official program for 2026 lists:
- December 29, 6:30 pm: the Torchlight Procession. Premium tickets add a warm-up event at McEwan Hall, a torch to carry and a separate entry lane. The organizers don’t recommend it for children under 12.
- December 30, 6 pm: the Night Afore Party with The Fratellis, and a concert by the Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis.
- December 31, 8 pm: the Street Party on Princes Street, with stages, DJs, pipers and drummers, giant screens, street food, and the Midnight Moment fireworks fired from Edinburgh Castle. Next door, Hogmanay in the Gardens is a separate ticketed concert in West Princes Street Gardens, where Underworld will play the soundtrack to the midnight fireworks live.
- January 1: First Footin’, a free, unticketed music trail around the city.
Street Party tickets were on sale when we checked, at £39 (about $52) including the £3.50 booking fee and a 50p charity donation, with a final release priced at £45 (about $60). Residents with an EH postcode pay £33. The event is for ages 12 and up. Buy only from the three official sellers, edinburghshogmanay.com, Ticketmaster and Tickets Scotland: the organizers say there is no official resale and tickets from Eventbrite or secondary sites aren’t valid.
Most Americans fly into London and take the train north on the East Coast line from King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley. Compare London to Edinburgh trains on Omio and book the outbound for December 29 or 30, so you arrive for the procession rather than on the day of the Street Party. Expect cold and damp weather: Edinburgh averages 45°F (7°C) by day and 34°F (1°C) at night in December, with rain on about 11 days.
If you stay on into January, the Scotland map on Guidez, Scotland by public transport: castles, the Highlands and Skye (in Hebrew), plots day trips from Edinburgh by train and bus.
London: the biggest fireworks, by ticket only
London’s fireworks over the Thames are the most famous New Year’s Eve show in Europe, and since 2014 the riverside viewing areas have needed a ticket. For 2026 the Mayor of London’s event page lists these prices, unchanged from last year:
| Viewing area | Price | With a London postcode |
|---|---|---|
| Category A: Blue, Pink, White | £55 (about $73) | £35 |
| Category B: Red, Green, Orange (Orange is the accessible area) | £40 (about $53) | £20 |
Tickets are sold only at Ticketmaster, up to four per buyer, plus a small booking fee. They come in two batches: the first went on sale on October 23, and the date of the second hadn’t been announced when we checked. Everyone needs a ticket, whatever their age. Gates open at 8 pm and close at 10:30 pm, the event ends at 12:30 am, and there’s no re-entry once you’re in. The city strongly advises against bringing young children, and under-16s must be with an adult.

The alternative to standing in a pen for four hours is the river itself. Boats book up like concert tickets, and the Thames New Year’s Eve dinner cruise is a sit-down dinner on the water timed for midnight. It’s an expensive night, so read what the boat’s position at midnight depends on before you pay. Tides and river traffic decide where each boat can hold.
Berlin: the free party at the Brandenburg Gate
Berlin is the best big free party. The city’s Senate Chancellery confirmed in September 2026 that it will again hold its New Year’s Eve party with DJs and fireworks in front of the Brandenburg Gate, and that entry will be free, the Berliner Kurier reported.
Plan around last year’s rules until the city publishes this year’s. For 2025, Berlin’s government announced that about 20,000 free tickets would be released in December, that the fireworks would go up at midnight, and that public TV would broadcast them live. Set a reminder for early December and claim yours the day they appear.

Berlin is also the coldest of the big party cities here after Reykjavik and Prague, averaging 40°F (4°C) by day and just below freezing at night in December.
Vienna: a free trail, waltzes and the New Year’s Concert
Vienna is the pick for a classic New Year’s Eve, and it’s free. The New Year’s Eve Trail (Silvesterpfad) runs on December 31, 2026, from 2 pm to 2 am, with food and drink stands opening at 11 am, according to the Vienna Tourist Board. It strings eight stages through the old town, from Freyung through Am Hof, the Graben, Stephansplatz and Kärntner Straße to Neuer Markt, with more at Rathausplatz and at Riesenradplatz in the Prater. Expect live bands, DJs and waltz lessons.
At midnight the Pummerin, the great bell of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, rings in the year, and the crowds dance to the Blue Danube waltz. Don’t bring fireworks: rockets and firecrackers are banned throughout the city.
On January 1 the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert starts at 11:15 am at the Musikverein, conducted in 2027 by Tugan Sokhiev for the first time, the tourist board says. Seats are allocated by a lottery that’s long closed, but the concert is shown on big screens at Stephansplatz and Riesenradplatz. For live music you can actually book, the Christmas and New Year concert at St. Peter’s Church is a string-quartet program of Strauss and Mozart in a Baroque church a few minutes from the Graben. The State Opera’s traditional New Year’s Eve performance is Die Fledermaus.
To walk home after midnight, stay central. Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design sits a few blocks behind City Hall in the Josefstadt district, close to the Rathausplatz stage.
Paris: the Champs-Élysées countdown or a Seine dinner cruise
Paris hadn’t announced its 2026 program when we checked, but the city has held a free countdown on the Champs-Élysées for years. Last year, according to the City of Paris, the avenue opened to the public at 7 pm, a video projection lit up the Arc de Triomphe at 11:50 pm and the fireworks started at midnight. Public transport was free from 5 pm on December 31 to noon on January 1, but metro stations around the avenue closed from the afternoon for security, so plan to walk in from further out.
The romantic option is a dinner cruise. The Bateaux Mouches New Year’s Eve dinner cruise is the long-format version, with dinner, music and midnight on the Seine. If you’re thinking of the Louvre on New Year’s Day, think again: it’s closed on January 1. Our Louvre tickets guide has the hours for the rest of your trip.
Madrid: twelve grapes at Puerta del Sol
Spain’s New Year’s tradition is the twelve grapes: you eat one on each chime of the clock at midnight, for luck in each month of the year. The place to do it is Puerta del Sol, under the clock of the Real Casa de Correos, which the whole country watches on TV.

Go early and travel light. In recent years the crowd has been capped at about 15,000 people. Police clear the square at 9 pm and then let people back in through Calle Alcalá, Carrera de San Jerónimo, Calle Mayor and Calle Arenal, and the Sol metro station closes for entry and exit from 6 pm, Time Out Madrid reported. If you can’t face the crowd, locals rehearse on December 30 with the “preúvas,” a practice countdown at midnight with gummy candies instead of grapes. Madrid is milder than northern Europe, averaging 50°F (10°C) in December.
Madeira: fireworks in a warm harbor
Madeira is the best New Year’s Eve in Europe for people who don’t want to freeze. Funchal averages 68°F (20°C) by day in December, according to Portugal’s weather service data, and the whole bay becomes an amphitheater for the fireworks. The display once held the Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks show, in 2006.
The 2026 show will be fired from 59 sites, 57 of them around Funchal (on the hillsides, along the waterfront and from five sea platforms) and two on Porto Santo, according to the regional government’s resolution reported by DNoticias. Last year’s lasted eight minutes, with 11 cruise ships moored in the harbor to watch. Hotels with a view of the bay are the ones to book first. The trade-off is rain: Funchal averages 13 wet days in December.
Reykjavik: bonfires first, then fireworks everywhere
Reykjavik’s New Year’s Eve is unlike anywhere else on this list, because residents set off their own fireworks across the whole city at midnight. The evening starts with neighborhood bonfires. The City of Reykjavik runs ten of them, most lit at 8:30 pm, and cancels them if the wind is over 10 meters per second. Walk there: the city limits car access.
The best view of the midnight fireworks is from somewhere high or from the water, and the New Year’s Eve fireworks cruise in Reykjavik heads out into the bay for it. Dress for it: Reykjavik averages 36°F (2°C) by day in December. The city also warns that smoke can push air quality past health limits in the first hours of the year, so people with asthma should watch from indoors.
If you stay a few days, our Iceland Ring Road itinerary covers the drive beyond the capital, though most of it is a summer route.
Prague and Budapest: markets, river cruises and better prices
Prague and Budapest are the value picks, and their Christmas markets are still open on New Year’s Eve. Prague’s Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets run until January 6, 2027, and Budapest’s Advent market at St. Stephen’s Basilica until January 1, as listed in our guide to Europe’s best Christmas markets.
Don’t go to Prague for fireworks. The city bans pyrotechnics in the historic center, along the Vltava and in parks, and police enforce the ban on New Year’s Eve, Prague 1’s town hall says. Go for the old town at night instead, and stay close: Hotel U Prince is on Old Town Square itself, facing the Astronomical Clock.
In Budapest the river is the show. The New Year’s Eve gala dinner cruise with live music sails the Danube past the floodlit Parliament and Buda Castle, which is a far better midnight view than the crowded embankments. On land, Aria Hotel Budapest is a block from St. Stephen’s Basilica and its market.
Amsterdam: the first New Year’s Eve under the fireworks ban
Amsterdam’s New Year’s Eve will be quieter than you may have heard. A nationwide ban on consumer fireworks took effect on August 1, 2026, and the turn of 2026 into 2027 is the first New Year’s Eve it covers, according to the Dutch government’s business portal. Sparklers and other small novelty fireworks are still allowed, and professional displays still go ahead, so check the city’s own program in December.
What doesn’t change is the Amsterdam Light Festival, which runs from November 26, 2026 to January 17, 2027. The official Light Festival canal cruise with a live guide is the easiest way to see the installations from the water, on a covered boat, which matters in a city that averages 18 wet days in December.
Rome and Lisbon: free concerts in the main square
Rome and Lisbon both put on free New Year’s Eve concerts, though neither had announced its 2026 lineup when we checked.
- Rome: last year Roma Capitale held its fourth free New Year’s Eve concert in a row at the Circo Massimo, starting at 9 pm, according to Turismo Roma. Note that the Colosseum normally closes on January 1; our Colosseum tickets guide has the details.
- Lisbon: the party is at Praça do Comércio on the river. Last year’s program, listed by Visit Lisboa, had concerts from 9:30 pm and fireworks over the Tagus at midnight, with free entry.
Which New Year’s Eve city should you pick?
- Best overall: Edinburgh. Three nights of events and the castle fireworks, and tickets are on sale now.
- Best fireworks: London. Buy a ticket from Ticketmaster or watch from a Thames dinner cruise.
- Best free party: Berlin, if you get one of the free tickets, or Vienna, where you don’t need one.
- Best for couples: Paris on a Seine dinner cruise, or Budapest on the Danube for less.
- Best for mild weather: Madeira, at 68°F (20°C), with Lisbon the cheaper mainland option.
- Best for something different: Reykjavik, with bonfires and a whole city setting off fireworks.
- Best value: Prague or Budapest, with Christmas markets still open.

Entry rules, phones and money for Americans
- ETIAS hasn’t started. The EU’s travel authorization was “scheduled to be introduced in the last quarter of 2026,” the EU Delegation to the US says, with the date to be announced months in advance. No date had been set when we checked, so for New Year’s 2026 a valid US passport is all you need for Schengen countries, Iceland included. You will have your fingerprints and photo taken at your first entry under the EU’s Entry/Exit System.
- The UK needs an ETA. London and Edinburgh require a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, which costs £20 (about $27). Apply on the official site or app, not through lookalike sites that charge more.
- Load your tickets before you leave the hotel. Every ticketed event here is checked on your phone. An Airalo eSIM for the UK or Europe costs less than a week of Verizon TravelPass or AT&T’s International Day Pass at $12 a day: use code GUIDEZ15 at checkout if you’re new to Airalo, or GUIDEZ10 if you’ve bought from them before. Our eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming comparison has the full price math.
- Cards work almost everywhere. Tap to pay is standard in all these cities. Use a card with no foreign transaction fee, and carry a little cash for market stalls.
Once the countdown is over, January is one of the cheapest months to travel. Our guide to the best places to travel in January 2027 picks up where this one ends, with warm escapes and snow trips for the weeks after New Year’s.
