Quick answer

  • Kutna Hora is the easiest day trip from Prague: direct trains take 51 minutes, and the Sedlec Ossuary is a 15-minute walk from the station. Ossuary tickets cost CZK 220 and must be booked for a time slot.
  • Cesky Krumlov is the prettiest but farthest: 2 hours 40 minutes each way on the direct RegioJet bus. From November 1, 2026, only the castle museum and tower are open, until December 20.
  • Dresden is 2 hours 19 minutes away on the direct EuroCity train, and Karlovy Vary about 2 hours by FlixBus. Terezin takes about an hour by bus.
  • Bohemian Switzerland is best by car. Pravcicka Gate, the park's famous sandstone arch, opens daily April to October but only Friday to Sunday from November to March.

Kutna Hora: the bone church and St Barbara’s

Kutna Hora grew rich on silver mining in the Middle Ages, and its center and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most people come for the Sedlec Ossuary, a small chapel decorated with the bones of tens of thousands of people, including a chandelier and a coat of arms made of skulls and bones.

How to get to Kutna Hora from Prague

Direct trains run from Praha hlavni nadrazi (the main station) to Kutna Hora hlavni nadrazi in 51 minutes, according to the IDOS national timetable. Other connections change at Kolin and take about 1 hour 15 minutes, so check that yours is direct. The ossuary is about a 15-minute walk from Kutna Hora’s main station. The old town and St Barbara’s are about 3 km farther, reached by local train to Kutna Hora mesto, local bus or a long walk.

Prices are from the Sedlec sights’ official site and St Barbara’s Cathedral. Ossuary tickets are capped by time slot, so book before you leave Prague, especially on weekends.

Plan: Ossuary first (it gets crowded by late morning), then the Sedlec cathedral, then the old town for lunch and St Barbara’s. Five to six hours on the ground is enough.

If you’d rather not handle trains and the 3 km between the two halves of town, a half-day trip to Kutna Hora from Prague takes care of the transport and leaves you free time in the old town. Check what the listing includes before you book, since entry tickets are not always part of the price.

Cesky Krumlov: worth a night if you can

Cesky Krumlov is a small medieval town wrapped around a tight bend of the Vltava, with a castle complex second in size only to Prague Castle in the Czech Republic. The whole historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s the most photogenic place on this list.

How to get to Cesky Krumlov from Prague

The direct RegioJet bus from Praha, Na Knizeci (next to Andel metro station) takes 2 hours 40 minutes. The train is slightly faster but needs a change: about 1 hour 40 minutes to Ceske Budejovice, then a 30-minute bus, for around 2 hours 20 minutes in total. Either way, that’s over five hours of travel in a day, which is why we’d stay a night.

Prices and hours come from the castle’s admission page and opening hours page. If you visit from November, you can still climb the tower and walk through the courtyards and over the Cloak Bridge, but the guided interiors are closed until spring.

Where to stay: Hotel Ruze is in a former Jesuit college in the old town, a few minutes’ walk from the castle.

Karlovy Vary: spa town with hot springs

Karlovy Vary is a spa town of grand 19th-century hotels and colonnades lining a narrow river valley, built around hot mineral springs. It’s part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe UNESCO listing.

Ornate cast-iron Park Colonnade with a domed pavilion in Karlovy Vary, surrounded by gardens

How to get to Karlovy Vary from Prague

Take the bus. FlixBus runs from Florenc bus station in about 2 hours 10 minutes and from Hradcanska in about 1 hour 50 minutes, and there are regional buses from Zlicin. The train is much slower, so skip it for a day trip.

What to do

  • Walk the colonnades. The Mill Colonnade is the grandest; the Park Colonnade is the prettiest.
  • See the Vridlo, the hottest spring, which shoots water several meters into the air inside the Hot Spring Colonnade.
  • Drink the water from a traditional spa cup with a spout, sold all over town. It tastes strongly of minerals and you won’t want much.
  • Try oplatky (thin spa wafers) and Becherovka, the herbal liqueur made in the town.

Where to stay: Make it a night in the Grandhotel Pupp if you want the classic spa experience. Check rates at Grandhotel Pupp.

Terezin: the Theresienstadt ghetto and Small Fortress

Terezin is an 18th-century fortress town that the Nazis turned into the Theresienstadt ghetto and transit camp from 1941 to 1945. Tens of thousands of Jews died there or were deported from it to extermination camps. The Small Fortress across the river was a Gestapo prison. It’s a sobering visit and the most important history lesson on this list.

How to get to Terezin from Prague

Buses leave from Praha, Nadrazi Holesovice (metro line C) and take about an hour to Terezin. The Ghetto Museum is in the town center, and the Small Fortress is about a 15-minute walk away. Allow at least four hours to see both.

Tip

A guide makes a real difference at Terezin, because much of the ghetto is now ordinary houses with nothing on the outside to tell you what happened inside. The Terezin Memorial offers guided tours, which are worth booking in advance.

Dresden: a day in Germany

Dresden, across the border in Saxony, is the most varied day trip from Prague: a rebuilt Baroque old town on the Elbe, the Frauenkirche (reconstructed and reopened in 2005), the Zwinger palace and the Old Masters Picture Gallery.

How to get to Dresden from Prague

The direct EuroCity train from Praha hlavni nadrazi to Dresden Hauptbahnhof takes 2 hours 19 minutes, following the Elbe valley for much of the way, according to the IDOS timetable. Some departures need a change in Usti nad Labem or Decin and take around 3 hours, so pick a direct train. It’s an international trip, so bring your passport or ID card.

In December, Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets, makes this an especially good trip. Read our roundup of the best Christmas markets in Europe for 2026 to plan a combined trip.

Where to stay: If you’d rather stay over, Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski is next to the Zwinger.

Bohemian Switzerland: sandstone arches and gorges

Bohemian Switzerland National Park, near the German border, is a landscape of sandstone towers, forested gorges and viewpoints. Its best-known sight, Pravcicka Gate, is the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe.

Pravcicka Gate hours and tickets

According to the Pravcicka brana website, the gate is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 from late March to October, and only on Fridays and weekends from 10:00 to 16:00 from November to March. Adult entry costs CZK 125. From Hrensko, it’s a walk of roughly an hour or a little more on the red-marked trail, most of it uphill. The forests here burned in 2022, so check the park’s trail notices before you go.

How to get there

By public transport, take the train from Praha hlavni nadrazi to Decin (about 1 hour 30 minutes), then the bus to Hrensko (about 20 minutes): roughly 2 hours in total on the IDOS timetable. That leaves a long but doable day of hiking.

By car, it’s about 2 hours from Prague, and you can combine the gate with viewpoints that buses don’t reach. Compare Hertz rental cars in Prague. You can only park in the official paid lots in Hrensko or at Mezni Louka.

Which Prague day trip should you choose?

  • One free day, any season: Kutna Hora. It’s the shortest trip on this list and nothing important closes in winter.
  • History: Terezin, ideally with a guide.
  • The prettiest town: Cesky Krumlov, with an overnight stay.
  • Architecture and art: Dresden, which also adds a second country to your trip.
  • Relaxed and easy: Karlovy Vary, where the main activity is walking the colonnades.
  • Hiking: Bohemian Switzerland, from April to October when Pravcicka Gate is open daily.

Prague day trips in winter

From November to March, Kutna Hora, Karlovy Vary, Terezin and Dresden work as well as in summer, and Dresden adds its Christmas market in December. Cesky Krumlov is quieter and often beautiful in frost, but the guided castle interiors are closed and only the museum and tower open, until December 20 in 2026. Bohemian Switzerland is the trip most affected: Pravcicka Gate opens only Friday to Sunday, days are short, and trails can be icy. Start early on any winter day trip, since it gets dark around 16:00 in December.

Train, bus, tour or car?

  • Train: Best for Kutna Hora and Dresden, where direct trains beat any other option.
  • Bus: Best for Cesky Krumlov, Karlovy Vary and Terezin.
  • Organized tour: Worth it for Terezin, where context matters, and for Cesky Krumlov if you only have one day and want someone else to handle the five hours of driving. Our Viator vs GetYourGuide comparison explains how the two big booking sites differ on cancellations and prices.
  • Car: Best for Bohemian Switzerland, or if you want to combine Kutna Hora with a castle on the way back.
